Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt from the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that I have learnt a lot from my prelim task to my final product, I main thing that I feel I learnt most about is time management in my prelim task I don’t feel that I time manage effectively and I left everything to the last minute which meant that if I had any problems it meant it was hard to find time to correct them. In my main task I time managed effectively and made it possible that when I came across problems to get the fixed in time and it also gave me time to change things if they needed to be. This also enabled me to meet all of my deadlines with ease and not to rush any of my products as then now I felt that it gave a more professional look to my finished product.
I also feel that I developed my skills during my main task as I had finished my products and then completed some market research and I didn’t feel my product was as successful as it could have been so I decided to create my magazine again.

I also learnt how to use Photo shop which was very useful as I didn’t edit any of my pictures in my prelim task but in my main task using Photoshop gave me the opportunity to edit my images and also to create better images and then cut them out to fit my magazine this helped me to create a more professional look for my magazine.
Completing my prelim task also helped me to know what is needed in a music magazine and this helped my to complete my main task this made it easier as I knew what I needed to include.
I feel that I have created my main task to the best of my ability, also I believe that it was the right choice to recreate my main task after my first attempt as I don’t think that they appeal to my target audience. If I had to complete this task again I would possible to more extensive market research so I could find out more what my target audience want from a music magazine.

Q

Question 5

I attracted my audience in many different ways by trying to Tailor make the magazine to the feedback that i was given through my market research.
By using a powerful masthead that is created in a font that will attract my core buyer as i used black and red as it appeals to both male and females which will help to widen my target audience. The name of the magazine will stick in the buyers' head because it's related to the music industry.  By giving interviews it gives plugs for the magazine to advertise on also it gives the band publicity which then the band could also advertise the magazine on their website or social networking site. I used popular artists that would appeal to my  audience as they would listen to their music or would be interested in finding out about them so that they would buy the magazine because they like the artist on the front or if they don't they would then know more about the artist. The artists I used are of a similar age to my target audience as they can relate to the artists as they will compare their lives with the artists and it can also offer escapism.
I used the common features on magazine front covers as this helps to create in house features which will make my magazine blend in with other magazine. The bar code for the magazine is at the bottom of the page as to not detract from the theme of the front cover. Also my target audience aren’t interested in the bar code as it just for the shops use. I used cover lines that would appeal to my target market and since a lot of teenagers and young adults go to music festivals such as Reading they would want to know they reading line up I also used the reading logo on my magazine as if people didn't know the
magazine they would notice the logo and then maybe attracted to the magazine. I used incentives such as win a new Nano Touch as my target audience will be interested in the product and as my magazine doesn't have a established brand name so the incentive may make some of my target audience buy the magazine. I also used the word exclusive on my magazine to make the reader feel as if my magazine is the only place they will find out this magazine.

I used the background to create a in house theme as it links in with the other pages that the artist are on also it allows the target to concentrate of the details of the double page spread as by having a powerful background my audience may just go straight past the page. I have chosen to use the image because it shows the artists in normal clothes which shows that they are role models to my target audience and being the same age range the girls can feel as if they can look like them. Also because of the relationship shown between the girls showing how close and relaxed they are with each other. I used a quote on this page as it will attract the audience to read the article as they will be drawn to the quote and then will read it. I used the word exclusive to make my target audience feel as if they are getting something that they won't get anywhere else. The problem with this page is that the picture if you look closely the picture the foot is sllightly rubbed out because it is the only way i could get rid of the background when editing and the font on the DPS that say "exclusive" stands out and draws to much attention away from the main image.

I used three different columns to break up the text on the page as if it was continuous writing the audience would just get bored and wouldn’t want to read the article. So breaking it up makes it easier to read.  I used a quote in the middle of the page to attract the reader to the article as my target audience are likely to flick through the magazine. With a big quote it attracts the reader to the article so they can quickly read the best parts of the interview. I used a picture showing one of the artists getting ready for the interview which gives a personal touch to the magazine and it makes the reader feel as if the article is more personal and it shows my target audience that their role models are just real people. The problem with this page is that the text is small so people may think that there is to much text on the page to read so may just flick past it.

Instead of stating contents page at the top I used this month as it is I more informal language that my target audience will like because it is the type of language they will use so they will feel as if they can access it as i chose to write my magazine in elaborate code as my target audience will be able to access it.
I used pictures of people that link to articles so the page isn’t just filled with writing this makes it more interesting for the reader and they can also know what to expect from the article.
I used a smaller image of the masthead to sub consciously remind the reader of the name of the magazine it also helps to create a strong brand identity so that people will buy my magazine again.
I also used a picture of the band that appear on my front cover so that people will know what page to find the main article which makes it easier for them to find the page so they are more likely to read the article.I used a plain white background as there is a lot of information on the page and by having a background as if there is to much information on the page my target audience are likely to just go past the page. The contents page is split into different sections as this makes it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for which makes it easier for them to read. I also put and incentive on this page showing that if they subsricbed to the magazine they would save money and because my target audience will have a limited budet so saving money will be appealing to them.

All of these point are relevant to how i made my magazine appeal to my target audience

.

I used a smaller image of the masthead to sub consciously remind the reader of the name of the magazine it also helps to create a strong brand identity. I also put a background on the page numbers so when the target audience go through the magazine they can find the page they want quickly.

Question 4 ...

It was important to establish my core buyer so I knew who would be my target market would be and then I could take this into account when designing my magazine. I have chose my core buyer through market research through my questionnaires and then later on through a focus group which help to finalise my details for my music magazine.

My core buyer for my magazine is teenagers and young adults as they are the ones with the most interest in music magazine. The magazine will be aimed at both male and females as the magazine has been created to have something for both females and males with males being able to read through some of the interesting articles to do with their favourite bands and the girls to be able to do the same but also read through the main article with the females that they can relate to. My target market after my questionnaire was going to be 16 to 20s as that was the outcome but then after my focus group i decided that it was quite a small audience to be aiming at so i have chosen to aim my magazine from 15- 25 as this widens my target audience and gives a larger audience to aim for. My target audience will have a interest in music and would like to explore the music industry further by buying a magazine. They will be from a working to middle class background and because the majority will be students they will have a limited budget and will have less money to spend of luxury items such as music magazines.

Question 3 ...

IPC MEDIA

I have chosen IPC media to distribute my magazine as they are the leading magazine publishing company in the U.K.

I have done research into IPC Media and found out that it produces over 85 iconic media brands, their print brands alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 44% of UK men – almost 27 million UK adults – while their online brands collectively reach 20 million users every month. I feel that this would be a good choice of company to distribute my magazine as they already have a big music magazine NME which is established music magazine which is a different genre of magazine to my magazine so that they will have a space in there gap in there distribution market also an other reason why I picked IPC Media is that they already have a knowledge of the music market.

IPC media are such a large company that they will be able to make people know about the magazine so that when the magazine is released people will know about the magazine. As IPC media have many ways in which they can advertise the magazine one of the reason i chose IPC is that with NME being an existing magazine they could advertise Tuned in their magazine so people would be more likely to buy the magazine also i could advertise NME magazine is Tuned as they aim for different genres of music.

My music magazine will be available in news agents but the main distribution channel would be in large stores such as WH Smith and in large supermarkets such as Waitrose/Tesco as they are easily acessible for people. Also they stock a large range of magazins and because my magazine is a specalist magazine the magazine range will have to be large. It will also be available at gig venues and if particular artists are holding a gig at a venue the magazine could be on sale there so that the fans from the gig would be more likely to buy the magazine because they like the artist in my magazine.

I believe that my magazine should be distributed is over the Internet as it would save cost on printing but also the Internet is one of the largest used technology so many people will be able to access it so IPC could have a website that people would be able to buy the magazine with their card and then read it and save it online. The reason I think the Internet is a good way to distribute is that of the introduction of the iPad which is the latest in progress in technology and if my magazine was able to be downloaded on to the ipad people would be able to save the magazine and read it where they wanted. Also another option is to have a Tuned Application for iPhones and Ipods as this would mean that people would be able to go straight to the website to access the magazine which would mean they wouldn’t have to go to a shop to buy it and they can access it easier. With the internet as well artists could advertise the magazine on there social networking site or website as they will  be feauturing in the magazine.

How does my product represent particular social groups?!!

My product is a music magazine and through research to find out my target audience I have taken into account a wide range of aspects such as age and gender I have kept these in mind while creating my magazine. As music has such a large audience this has enabled me to have a large audience to aim for. My target audience is male and females aged between 16 – 20 as they will have a limited income the genre of the magazine had to be quite wide as my audience won’t have a lot of money to buy individual magazines.

The genre of my magazine is R n B, Rock and other popular choices of music as then my magazine appeals to a wide social group. I also chose this genre as i feel there is a gap in the market as there is not a magazine for R n B or Pop music so the fans are left with nothing to read if they like that genre of music. To make my production work appeal to my audience I have to make sure that all of my models appeal to my audience. I chose models that are in the same age range as my target audience as they will be able to relate to them, and the models were styled to create the “girl next door look” which will make my audience feel as if they can look like the models in the magazines.

The colours used throughout the magazine are Black, White, Red and Yellow I have used these colours as they are not associated with a particular social group but they are associated with music magazine with using colours that don’t have a particular audience this then allows my magazine to have a larger target audience.

On my front cover I used cover lines that would appeal to my target audience as they will be interested in some of the things that are going on and by using a well known band it will attract a larger audience as they will want to read about the artists. I used reading festival as a cover line as my target audience are in the age range that the majority go to festivals every year so they will be interested in knowing who is performing at reading. I also used a picture of a girl group as the main image this would appeal to mainly the girl audience as they tend to be interested in girl groups but then also to keep the male audience happy they will be interested in the cover lines on my front cover.

My contents page has the same colours as the front page as it creates a strong brand identity I have used a picture of the artists that are on my front cover because they are the main hook for the magazine people will be buying it to read about them. I also just a range of different cover lines from different genres of music as I feel that this will appeal to a large audience.

On my double page spread I used artists that are doing well in the music industry and that are in the same age range so they appear as role models to the girl target audience that my magazine will attract. As the girls will then see that these girls have achieved highly and that they should follow their aspirations. Also I used the same colour scheme to help create a strong brand identity that would stick in the reader head.

Drawing on all of that information i don't think that my magazine is indented at a particular social group as that would narrow down my target audience and then the magazine wouldn't gain as much market share as with the magazine industry being so popular my magazine needs a large target market so i believe that my magazine is indented at a wide range of social groups that are interest in the genre of music that my magazine provides.
